Adopting Environmental Best Management Practices

Farm woodlots, windbreaks, and buffer strips can provide on-farm and off-farm benefits such as reducing soil erosion, providing wildlife habitat, and protecting water quality. How widespread are these environmental best management practices, and why do farmers adopt them or not? What might programs look like that could help with these practices?

Michael Drescher studied at the Universities of Utrecht and Wageningen in the Netherlands. He has researched forests and how cattle adopt their foraging behavior in response to changes in the species composition and structure of grasslands. He has worked for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and is now Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo.
