Making the Leap, Growing from 50-500

A 'how it happened here' perspective of rapidly growing the flock from small to large scale: being part of the Ontario sheep industry for close to 20 years.

Markus farms full-time in partnership with his wife Jennifer in Powassan. The farm operation consists of 650 commercial ewes and 80 beef cow/calf pairs in an intensively managed grazing system, along with hogs, chickens and turkeys for niche marketing. Lambs are primarily born and raised on pasture and most lambs are finished as heavy lambs on-farm. The farm business is constantly shifting more market animals from a commodity basis, to local and niche marketing, and to the North Bay Farmers Market, to capture more revenue from each unit produced.
